100 000 SEALS !!

in an area of about
one square kilometre on
the coast of Namibia
make this the largest colony
in the southern hemisphere
(and one of the
smelliest places on earth).

During the breeding season
numbers increase
when the bulls arrive,
weighing up to 360 kg.
They depart six weeks later
having lost half of that.

Mommy will leave her pup
for several days at a time
on fishing trips out at sea.
On her return they find
each other by calling.
Tens of thousands of seals
may be calling
at the same time,
but they know
each other's voice so well,
they can pick it out
from the noise.
